FAMILY MINISTRY

What is Family Ministry?  It is ministry to families.  Why do we need Family Ministry?  The answer is represented in the following picture:

You may be wondering:  “what does that mean?”  The yellow represents the amount of time per week – 1 hour out of 168 total hours available in a week – that a child spends at church  learning about Jesus.  It (1/168) doesn’t look like a good percentage does it?  If children are to build a faith that will stick throughout their lives, we need to improve that percentage – they  need to spend more than 1/168 of their weekly time learning about Jesus.

Enter the family!  When the family becomes involved by partnering with the church and by  reinforcing the same learning at home that the church provided in that 1 hour per week, we   increase significantly the chances that the child will develop a faith that sticks.

So, the church needs to minister to families, to train, to involve, and to equip families to  continue the child’s discipleship at home.

We are beginning work on what Family Ministry means to Southport United Methodist Church.  Be watching and listening for more news in the coming months.
