NEXT STEPS YOU CAN TAKE ON YOUR JOURNEY




In our journeys, there are next steps that we can all be taking on our Christian journey.  Here are few examples:

Come to worship each week and worship God as a Body of Christ.
Many of you are already taking a next step in your journey of growing toward Christlikeness by being involved in a CORE Discipleship class.

Some of you are in a small group on Sunday morning or during the week.

Keep watching in December and January as we get ready for JOURNEY GROUPS.  (Oops – I let the cat out of the bag.)

Many, many of you are serving on a ministry team, in this building or in the community.

Here are a few more ways to continue on your journey while helping others on their journeys.  

Children are new to their faith journey.  We need to help them to grow.  A way that you can help them on their journey and continue on your journey is to help with Children’s Ministries, including Children’s Church.

Imagination Station is our preschool and childcare program at Southport United Methodist Church.  We are a CHRISTIAN preschool and childcare program.  Imagination Station is always looking for adults that love children and want to help children as they start their journey.  We have job openings right now for childcare workers.

Youth are a little farther along in their journey than children might be.  (By the way, where we are in our spiritual journey is not directly related to how old we are.)  Our Student Ministries also needs people to help youth on their journey.

As we start to roll out JOURNEY GROUPS (oops, I did it again), we will need leaders to facilitate and host short term studies.  (Keep watching for more information.)

These are just a few ways that you can be on your own journey while helping others on their journeys.  Consider taking one of these next steps.

Dear Friends, As I am writing this letter, I am still reeling from the news of the terrible tragedy that continues to unfold in Oklahoma.  I am sure that all of you know that an F5 tornado devastated Moore, a suburb of Oklahoma City.  At the time of my writing this communication, we still do not have complete information on the total number of fatalities and injuries.  We do know that the damage can only be described as complete and total devastation. As I have watched the news reports over the past several days, I have heard people tell their stories.  Over and over again I heard people say, “All I could do was pray.”  “I prayed that God would keep me and my family safe.”  On one report I saw a video clip that had been filmed by a person that was a safe distance away from the storm.  As he taped the scene he witnessed the incredible power and destruction that was happening right before his eyes.  The person audibly offered this prayer....

Fall Kairos Weekend Volunteers Soon to be Trained

Since 2012, a significant number of people from SUMC have been involved in Kairos Prison Ministry.  Some have also been or currently are weekend leaders, state officials, and even an international officer. In October and November, there are many opportunities to serve, both inside and outside the prison walls.  Team formation is in the process for three inside facilities where SUMC members serve.  The first is Indiana Women’s Prison, October 3-6, followed a week later by Plainfield Correctional Facility for men, October 10-13.  A third is Rockville Correctional Facility (women) October 31-November 3. There will be a ministry table at church July 11 and 14 as well as August 22 and 25.  Check those out to find all the different ways to serve as well as how to sign up to attend a closing. FOOD PANTRY COLLECTIONS

Dear servants...you are so awesome!  Again in September you raised the bar.  You donated a total of 406 pounds of food to Hunger INC Food Pantry located on Epler just west of Madison Ave.  This pantry services all of Perry Township residents and Beech Grove.   (At this rate we may need a van for delivery.)  We also had a late donation of buns totaling 19 more pounds.  Food can be taken anytime to the Pantry if you want to deliver on your own.  On one Thursday in August, the pantry passed out 1000 pounds of food to the 29 persons who were there the 3 hours the pantry was open.   Three of those 29 were homeless folks.  As you shop look for food cans with pop-top tabs for easy opening for those people without a home.  There are certain staples given out to everyone that are provided with the pantry money collected through Meijer's Simply Give donations each year.
