Kairos Offers Many Ways to Serve

Four women of SUMC (Lyndsay Bierce, Karen Decatur, Billie Hunteman and Connie Klipsch) are in the midst of training to serve at a Kairos Prison Ministry weekend at the Indiana Women’s Prison (IWP) June 5-8.  They are among at least 44 women from various churches in the Central Indiana area who will minister to 42 incarcerated women at IWP.

On April 24 and 27, representatives will be at a Next Steps table to let you know how you can be a vital part of that ministry. There are many ways those who do not wish to serve inside the prison walls can help to make the spiritual retreat a success.
The first is prayer.  It is an extremely emotional moment when the participants see a long   prayer chain with thousands of names of people who are praying for them.  You can sign up for a time to pray and receive a reminder slip about that time as well as a list of specific ideas for prayer.

Another way to help is to bake cookies.  If this is your talent, be sure to pick up the specific chocolate chip cookie recipe at the table.  The cookies make a statement in ways hard to imagine.  They show love from those who bake them, and they are a powerful instrument for forgiveness within the walls of the correctional facility.
A third way is to give financially.  A single gift of $10 for a meal ticket can provide two  separate meals during the weekend.  Also placing your name and address on the back of the meal ticket (if giving cash) or that information on a check lets the Kairos treasurer know to whom to send an end-of-year statement for income tax deduction purposes for your charitable contribution.  All checks (no matter the amount) should be made out to Kairos of Indiana with IWP #15 in the memo line.

Finally, among other ways to help is attending a closing at the prison facility on the last date of the retreat, June 8.  It’s an overwhelming experience for the women from IWP to know that someone cares enough to attend.  It also is a remarkable experience for those from outside the prison walls to hear the testimonies of the inmates.  Attending a closing is another way to discover whether you might be interested in working a weekend retreat in the future. The Next Steps table will have information on attending the closing with the final registration date.
