DISCIPLES SERVE

It is always amazing how God presents additional opportunities for the disciples of Southport Church to serve using the gifts and passion with which He has blessed us
An Update on
PROJECT TRANSFORMATION
improving CHILDREN’s literacy, social-emotional, and spiritual development through an out-of-school ministry led by college-age young adults
COLLEGE STUDENTS invest in the lives of underserved children as they live in community, explore their calling, and develop as servant leaders
CHURCHES reconnect and build relationships with their neighbors
There are so many exciting aspects of PT designed around their vision.  SUMC will take small steps in 2019 to be involved in the ministry and to learn. Our hope is to grow and expand our abilities to serve the children in our community complementing how we are serving through our partnership with Homecroft Elementary.
This year we will invite adults to be reading partners with children in three different UM communities: St. Andrew UM near Garfield Park, North UMC at 38th and Illinois, and Cumberland UMC on the east side.
Our adults would choose any day (Monday through Thursday) from approximately 9:30am to 12:00pm, June 17 through July 25, at any one of the 3 churches and be a reading partner. We can choose to fill positions for a week (MTWTh) at one church, or pick days as each person is available. We can do this as a group or as individuals since some may have conflicts with schedules or just want to give it a try first.
You have one child read with you for about 35 minutes (this is after some input and support from the PT interns), then a second child, break, and one more child before you leave.
There is so much more good news to hear about Project Transformation. Visit the web site www.projecttransformation.org/Indiana.

Reaching and supporting children in their growth and learning periods is so important. That is ONE reason PT fits our mission of making disciples. Another just as important piece is how PT is guiding and providing our college age young adults with resources, training and guidance in discerning their calling in life.  We will learn more about this in the future. At a time when young adults and youth question everything about life, and often choose to leave the church, this is when we need to offer God to them in every way possible.
Please call the church office, 317 784-9508 to share your interest in being a reading partner.
