Seeking Volunteers: Refugee School Engagement Program

My name is Jessica Solomon and I’m a volunteer coordinator with a new program that focuses on assisting refugee parents of elementary-age children with navigating the American school system. The Refugee School Engagement Program partners with the Chin Community Center to equip parents with the understanding and tools they need to be involved in their child’s education.

This is a new program and we are currently seeking volunteers in the community to help this upcoming fall when the program is set to begin. Below are details on what the volunteers will be doing, when the program will begin and how to apply as a volunteer.

Volunteers will work directly with parents on the following:

Establishing habits of reading/exploring books together
Sufficient understanding of the school system and how to communicate with their child’s teacher
Awareness and training in accessing helpful online, in-school, and library/community resources
Helping increase their involvement and confidence in assisting their child with homework
Recognition of language and structure patterns in homework and communications from their child’s teacher in order to assist with comprehension

Volunteers with the program are expected to commit an hour each week. We currently need volunteers to serve as mentor-tutors working directly with parents and their student as reading coordinators, and volunteers to help with activities for younger siblings who come with their parents. Families are welcome to volunteer together.

The fall session will begin August 29, 2018 and end October 10, 2018, Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30. Sessions will be held at the Chin Community Center on Stop 11 Rd. There may also be an opportunity for volunteers to participate in a winter session which would begin after the holidays.

Those who are interested in learning more about the program or applying to serve as volunteers can visit our website at https://refugeeschoolengag.wixsite.com/refugeeschoolprogram.

We will individually contact volunteers who apply to answer questions, and at that point, we will direct them on how to complete a required background check. The cost for this will be up to $25.  Training will be provided to volunteers in mid-August.

Thank you for considering this volunteer opportunity. We continue to look for ways to assist the refugees on the Southside of Indianapolis, and we’d be happy to discuss our program and the needs of the refugee community with you at any time.

Sincerely,
Jessica Solomon
